1602 - An attack by forces under the command of the Duke of Savoy and his brother-in-law, Philip III of Spain, is repelled by the citizens of Geneva. Commemorations/celebrations on FĂȘte de l'Escalade are usually held on December 11 or the closest weekend in Geneva
1816 - Citizens of Geneva thwarted Savoyard invaders
1907 - New Zealand Parliament Buildings almost completely destroyed by fire.
1909 - Colored moving pictures demonstrated at Madison Square Garden, NYC

1946 - The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) was established by the U.N. General Assembly.

1971 - The Libertarian Party of the United States is formed.
1979 - Great Britain grants independence to Zimbabwe (Rhodesia)

1994 - The world's largest free trade zone was created when leaders of 34 Western Hemisphere nations signed a free-trade declaration known as "The Miami Process."

1997 - Agreement at the global warming conference in Kyoto, Japan, to control the Earth's "greenhouse gases.  The protocol commits nations to roll back greenhouse gas emissions to below 1990 levels
