1844 - During a demonstration of naval fire power, one of the guns aboard the USS Princeton exploded. Several top U.S. government officials were killed. President John Tyler escaped narrowly.

1986 - Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme (1927-1986) was assassinated in Stockholm while exiting a movie theater with his wife.

1994 - NATO conducted its first combat action in its 45 year history as four Bosnian Serb jets were shot down by American fighters in a no-fly zone.

1943 - During World War II in the Pacific, a Japanese convoy was attacked by 137 American bombers as the Battle of Bismarck Sea began. The convoy included eight destroyers and eight transports carrying 7,000 Japanese soldiers heading toward New Guinea. Four destroyers and all eight transports were sunk in the battle.

March 5, 1946 - The "Iron Curtain" speech was delivered by Winston Churchill at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. Churchill used the term to describe the boundary in Europe between free countries of the West and nations of Eastern Europe under Soviet Russia's control.

Japanese killed numbered 2,352, with only 28 taken prisoner, as 500 chose suicide rather than be captured.

1871 - The Great Fire of Chicago erupted. According to legend, it started a cow kicked over a lantern in her barn on DeKoven Street. Over 300 persons were killed and 90,000 were left homeless as the fire leveled 3.5 square miles, destroying 17,450 buildings. Financial losses totaled over $200 million.

1962 - Astronaut John Glenn became the first American to complete a full orbit of the earth. Traveling aboard the "Friendship 7" spacecraft, Glenn reached an altitude of 162 miles (260 kilometers) and completed three orbits in a flight lasting just under five hours. Glenn was the third American in space, Alan Shepard and Virgil “Gus” Grissom completed short sub-orbital flights. Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin who was the first human in space, completing one orbit on April 12, 1961

1836 - Fort Alamo fell to Mexican troops led by General Santa Anna. The Mexicans had begun the siege of the Texas fort on February 23rd, ending it with the killing of the last defender. "Remember the Alamo" became a rallying cry for Texans who went on to defeat Santa Anna in the Battle of San Jacinto in April.

October 10, 1973 - Spiro T. Agnew (1918-1996) resigned the office of Vice President of the United States amid charges of income tax evasion on illegal payments allegedly received while he was governor of Maryland and after he became Vice President. He was later given a $10,000 fine and sentenced to serve three years probation.


2010 -  Sajid Khan, an antique dealer of New York threw a book onto the dais where President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were addressing a meeting.
