On 4 June 1989, Chinese military marched to the Tiananmen Square ground in Beijing and killed the protesters assembled there in thousands demanding democracy in China.

The Sequence of Events
15 April 1989
Hu Yaobang, a communist party general secretary, who was deposed due to his pro-reform thinking and advocacy died of heart attack. Students came together to mourn the death of Hu Yaobang.
17-21 April
10,000 Students gathered at the Tiananmen Square with mourning banners and funeral wreaths. Banners in support of freedom, democracy and rule of law were also displayed. Next day, there was a demonstration in front of the Great Hall of People in support of seven demands.
22 April
3 students demand meeting with Li Peng, the Premier. Were not given audience. The protesters swell to 100,000 during the funeral of Hu.
26 April
The People's daily described the protest as the work of a small handful of plotters and call them anti-party and anti-government.
27 April
About 100,000 students from Beijing universities march to Tiananmen Square.
13 May
300,000 people at the square. Many on hunger strike.
19 May
General Secretary, Zhao Ziyang went to Tiananmen Square and appealed to students to stop the protest and go back to studies and take care of their health.
20 May
China declared martial law in Beijing. 250,000 military personnel sent to Beijing.
29 May
Goddess of Democracy Status raised in Tiananmen Square.
4 June
At 1 am, army surrounded the Square and cleared the ground by morning in five hours using force to kill people and evacuate them by arresting them.
5 June
A lone protester stands alone to block number of tanks.
6 June
Deng Xiao Ping appears in public and praised the military.
