1922 – Japanese aircraft carrier Hōshō becomes the first purpose built aircraft carrier to be commissioned in the world.
1927 - Stalin's faction won All-Union Congress in USSR, Trotsky expelled
1934 - Shah of Persia declared Persia as Iran
1942 - The Union of Pioneers of Yugoslavia was founded.
1945 - International Monetary Fund and World Bank founded
1972 - New North Korean constitution came into effect
1976 - Albania constitution came effect
1979 – The Soviet Union invades the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan.
2007 – Former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto is assassinated in a shooting incident.

Christmas Eve

1851 – Library of Congress burns.
1924 – Albania becomes a republic.
1946 - 4th French republic established
1951 – Libya becomes independent from Italy. Idris I is proclaimed King of Libya.
1954 - Laos gains its independence
1968 – The crew of Apollo 8 enters into orbit around the Moon, becoming the first humans to do so. They performed 10 lunar orbits and broadcast live TV pictures that became the famous Christmas Eve Broadcast.
1999 – Indian Airlines Flight 814 hijacked in Indian airspace between Kathmandu, Nepal, and Delhi, India; The aircraft was taken to Kandahar, Afghanistan. On December 31, Indian Government handed over some terrorists and got the release of 190 survivors (1 passenger killed).

1961 - Amnesty International was founded by London lawyer Peter Berenson. He read about the arrest of a group of students in Portugal then launched a one-year campaign to free them called Appeal for Amnesty. Today Amnesty International has  members in 150 countries working to free prisoners of conscience, stop torture and the death penalty, and guarantee human rights for women.

2007 - China's CSI 300 Stock Market Index rose above 4000 mark for the first time. It touched the peak of 4090.57. The CSI 300 was valued at 46 times earnings, maing it the most expensive market in the Asia-Pacific Region.
2008 - The first meeting of the Constituent Assembly of Nepal formally declares Nepal a republic, ending the 240-year reign of the Shah dynasty.

William Pitt the Younger (1759-1806). He became British prime minister at age 24 and served from 1783 to 1801 and again from 1804 to 1806.

All-around athlete Jim Thorpe (1888-1953) was born near Prague, Oklahoma. He won the pentathlon and decathlon events at the 1912 Olympic Games. .

2012 News

A small portion of a tunnel in Japan collapsed. 100 metre long section of Sasago tunnel,  on the Chugo Express Highway close to Tokyo caved in and concrete slabs fell on cars. Some car caught fire and smoke filled the tunnel. Rescue works are going on
