1538 - The first university in the New World (Western Hemisphere), the Universidad Santo Tomás de Aquino (University of Saint Thomas Aquinas), was established in Spain.

The university was organized by a papal bull (In Apostulatus Culmine dated 28 October 1538 by Pope Paul III). It was officially recognized by Royal Decree in 1558.  (University of Saint Thomas Aquinas).

 1945 - The Nuremberg War Crimes Trial began with indictments against 24 former Nazi leaders including Hermann Göring and Albert Speer.
