28 October History and Importance of the Day

1492 - Christopher Columbus discovers Cuba and claims it for Spain

1538 - The first university in the New World (Western Hemisphere), the Universidad Santo Tom├ís de Aquino (University of Saint Thomas Aquinas), was established in Spain.

The university was organized by a papal bull (In Apostulatus Culmine dated 28 October 1538 by Pope Paul III). It was officially recognized by Royal Decree in 1558.  (University of Saint Thomas Aquinas).

1636 - Harvard University (Cambridge, Massachusetts) was founded
1793 - Eli Whitney applies for a patent on cotton gin
1922 - Benito Mussolini takes control of Italy's government
1954 - Nobel Prize for Literature is awarded to Ernest Hemingway


1914 - Jonas Salk, medical reseacher (polio vaccine), born in NYC, New York
1955 - Bill Gates
